New York City Happenings – Bee Scene: Charity can taste good

Posted Friday, June 20th, 2008 at 3:00 pm by Amanda in Social Bees. More in 10014

In about 24 hours, I’ll be eating a traditional Polish-style dinner at my little brother’s wedding: kluski noodles, mashed potatoes, Polish sausage and about 15 other types of meat. The Polish know how to party. I should know; I’m currently in my hometown with my crazy family who is successfully incorporating vodka into every meal. Impressive.

I’m happy to know that the partying and overeating doesn’t have to stop when I return to NYC.

If you’re looking for a tasty way to support an important nonprofit, consider this amazing food festival taking place on Monday, June 23 at Pier 54 in Manhattan.

Garden Party 25 will celebrate the 25th anniversary of a very important nonprofit, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center, the largest LGBT multi-service organization on the East Coast.

More than 35 restaurants will offer samplings from their menus outdoors overlooking the Hudson River. Garden Party is the kick-off event for Gay Pride Week in NYC, and is the only LGBT culinary festival in the country.

Tickets start at $85 and here is a list of the participating restaurants and food companies. It’s an impressive list!

Ruth Reichl, Editor-in-Chief of Gourmet magazine, is the event chair, and the three VIP chefs are boldface names that any foodie in New York would recognize: David Chang (Momofuku), April Bloomfield (The Spotted Pig) and Johnny Iuzzini, Executive Pastry Chef at Jean-Georges.

A delicious way to celebrate Pride month! I will definitely be attending this scrumptious food festival because, um, I’m coordinating the event.

And if you are looking for a cheaper outdoor dining experience, you can always grab a Nathan’s hot dog at the Mermaid Festival taking place at Coney Island on Saturday, June 21.
