Brooklyn Sting: The Moth, Storytelling with a Sting in the Tale

Posted Tuesday, May 12th, 2009 at 4:58 pm by Tara in Cultural Bees. More in 11215

Host Sara Barron is all of a flutter

Did you ever hear the one about what really went on behind the scenes? No? Brooklynites, start your engines… on Monday, June 1, The Moth’s legendary StorySLAM is hitting Park Slope’s grungy Southpaw for a night of tall tales and witty raconteuring on that very theme. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., but if the monthly nights at the Village’s The Bitter End are anything to go by, you’re going to want to grab your friends  and start queuing up early — this night of racy revelations and cringe-worthy confessions is bound to be a packed house.

So what’s it all about then?

Imagine a cross between an amateur stand-up comedy tournament and a night in a pub with a mate recounting their wilder escapades and you’re half-way there. Throw in a hilarious host determined to air their dirty dating washing and a few rounds of drinks and you’re on course for about as much fun as you can reasonably expect for seven bucks.  By turns sad, seedy and riotously funny, the stories told by the ten volunteers are all marked for quality and adherence to the night’s theme. Budding storytellers should check out The Moth’s website for upcoming topics and start polishing up their performance. But beware: stray over the six minute mark and you’ll be buzzed off-stage. Now that’s one way to keep a shaggy-dog story well-trimmed…
