All Things New York – Concierge Corner: Live it up!

Posted Friday, January 9th, 2009 at 1:27 pm by Marissa in Cultural Bees. More in 10013

Welcome back for the last edition under Bush’s reign. Join us next week for an Inauguration Special – I will be acting as your very own D.C. CONCIERGE. We will be highlighting what is going on in the Nation’s Capital as well as the Nation’s Hippest City (NYC if you were wondering). That is right…a double-header. Email me for requests if you are still left wondering what will be going on and where it’s happening. It’s a guide for New-Yorkers who are partying on the National level that week(end).

Keep sticking to those New Year Resolutions folks. And if you need any help – keep checking out our weekly tidbits. We will make you a better person for it. Smooches.

The Week(end) Ahead:
Raising the ‘Bar’: Manhattan’s FIRST Winery in over 40 years! Ladies and Gents…City Winery has arrived. That means your parents were tykes when they last saw greatness of this kind. In a chic warehouse on Varick Street – lives your new best friend. This vinotorium is not only a restaurant and wine bar, but you can attain private barrel ownership – which, yes…means winemaking, and they offer live events. I told you this is pure, unadulterated fabulousness. A few more deets: 50 wines by the glass; they serve yummy Murray’s Cheeses to accompany your vino and will start serving a full dinner menu next week. Open daily from noon-midnight means all sorts of goodies – a dip-in for your shopping days, lunch or brunch with your group and romantic dinners whilst swaying to the hymns of well-known musicians. Musicians like Boz Scaggs that is, the ol’ Steve Miller Band alumni. Come and see the master and the Greatest Hits Band celebrate an evening to benefit “Save the Music”. He is here This accomplished guitarist will be featured on January 11th. There is a 6 pm seating for the 8 pm show. You can choose Bar Stool seating for $35 or Reserve a Table for $65. Tickets are available by calling 212.608.0555 or emailing. City Winery is located at 155 Varick Street (btwn Spring & Vandam Sts).

Ya ‘Heard’ it Here: One of my favorite artists and a NY staple – Mos Def will be performing tonight, January 9th at 9 pm. Highline Ballroom is a great venue to see this star as he graces us with his tongue-in-cheek music. Check out his latest tracks from The Ecstatic, which was leaked on Election Day. Many greats were collaborated with on the actual album, and in person he is sure not to disappoint with some possible guest appearances from Artists on the album in store. Highline is located at 431 W 16th St (btwn 9th & 10th Aves). Call for more information – 212.414.5994. TIckets are $40-45 each. ‘Brooklyn we go hard…we go hard”

What a Night: Thought festival magic was locked-in only over the Summers here in the city? Nay my friends, for I bring to you the slamming Winter Jazz Fest. Taking place at Sullivan Hall, (le) Posson Rouge and Kenny’s Castaways. This Saturday, January 10th at 7:30 pm, come to experience a winter whirl of activity. 20 bands in 10 hours which will be sure to treat your ears kindly, instead of this cold breeze that is upon us. Check out the lineup by clicking on one of the three locations where the artists are performing.

Cool Culture: Just as patriotism is a current topic, none other than Jasper Johns will be exhibiting his drawings and prints at MOMA; Such pieces as the ‘target’, the ‘numbers’, the ‘flag’ and other good findings. Make sure you go any other day but Tuesday (they are closed) to 11 West 53rd St (btwn 5th & 6th Aves). Call for more info, like hours and such: 212.708.9400.

Watch This: There are many indie theatres in the city. One that is a classic, is The Public Theatre. Presenting the experimental and independent exciting shows that NYC is famous for, they are now showcasing ‘Under the Radar’. This is literally the most exciting crash course to theatre that you will ever enjoy. Check out some of the most dynamic artists working today . Going on until January 18th, check out their $15 tickets and event details here. The theatre is located at 425 Lafayette Street (btwn Astor Pl &  E. 4th St).

A La Mode: Make like Obama’s bodyguards and learn some defense tactics to keep you safe and in (the) office. Michael Militano Wing Chun Kung-Fu is designed to teach you maximal defense. Wing Chun was originally developed by a Buddhist nun (yes, a woman) who was taught the art to fend off a warlord’s sexual advances. Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris have also practiced this wonderful art. Not so girly anymore, huh. Militano, the 30-year ‘sifu’ operates out of this charmingly aged Chinatown tenement, which is somehow befitting. Using techniques to dodge thrown garbage cans, dip away from boxing throws and learning to balanace using the “Sticking Hands” technique. Go get tough(er) this New Year. Get your Wing Chun on at 123 Bowery near Grand, 5th floor. You can also call 347.248.6924 for Adult Class times or for any information needed to get your bottom-dollar there.

Bee Here: The one thing you should NOT miss this week is the Barney’s Sale. Gloriously fabulous fashion at slashed prices up to 60% off for men, women, baby and home. The best news of all – you can even shop online and not have to weather the weather. Shop till you drop (your wallet). Enjoy kiddies.

Bee sure not to miss our DOUBLE-HEADER next week with the hottest events and happenings in D.C. and N.Y.C.
