All Things New York – Concierge Corner: Marissa at your Service

Posted Friday, November 14th, 2008 at 10:48 am by Marissa in Cultural Bees. More in 10012

With everyone squeezing in last-minute-before-the-holidays-start vacations to nearby destinations, the city seems a bit less crowded. But in no way does that mean there are less things to do. With the goose-day (or turkey day) two weeks away, take a gander at the happenings below. And lookout for a special Concierge Corner on December 5th – to include a special, Shoppers Guide for the holidays. My gift to you! Next week’s guide will offer up some Thanksgiving Week fun and perhaps some Black Friday shopping tips if you behave.

And as always, if you have any questions or requests for next week’s section, do let your Neighborbee concierge know.

The Week(end) Ahead

What a Night: If for no other reason than to just let me know how ridiculously fun this party was – you should go here tonight Friday the 14th. No Ordinary Monkey is no ordinary party. You get a bunch of people together in a Chinatown-mall restaurant to drink and dance until 4 am. The Laughing Light of Plenty is spinning and the retailer IHeart and shopgirls are hosting. Find the party beginning at 10pm, at the 88 Palace Mall, 88 E. Broadway (between Market & Pike St). Take the escalators upstairs, and good luck.

Rockin’ Restaurants: A short time ago, Boqueria opened up a tapas haven on 19th street. Now, they have a bigger, sister restaurant in the shoppers-paradise, Soho. An open kitchen welcomes bar seats and a semi-private dinner table large enough for your birthday party, or perhaps Thanksgiving this year. Open Tuesday – Friday from 5pm – 12am, Sat. & Sun. from noon-midnight, they will be starting breakfast in December, but serving dinner and drinks for now. Make your way on over and grab yourself some Raciones. New location just opened at 171 Spring St (between Broadway & Thompson St). The greatest news of all is they (unlike their Flatiron sister) take rezzys! So call up 212-343-4255 if you want to make like an Hawaiian tree and breeze in to impress your date.

Wile Wine Events: Sorry fellas, you will have to sit this one out; Or, you could sit outside and watch the ladies hop onto their very own wine-bus. A ‘Girls Only’ day out of NYC and into some culture with Wine-tainted air, courtesy of The Little Wine Bus. Touring the Hudson Valley with Peach Brandy muffins and more including Champagne Mimosa, this is a ride surely not to be missed. This Saturday, November 15th at 9am meet the group at 1585 Broadway (47th St & Bwy – Morgan Stanley Building). Tickets are $125 and for more information on purchasing them, like now (it’s tomorrow ladies!) call 917-414-7947.

Watch This: Next Saturday & Sunday (the 22nd and 23rd), The Debate Society brings us a special performance at PS 122. Why would you need to know now? Because tickets will sell out, silly. With their take on a drive-in theater, a cartoon and the road-trip portraying film welcomes you to the viewing of classic Americana. Cape Disappointment tickets are sold here.

Bee Here : Got an eye for fashion? Want to get in on the action? Well, Housing Works has an incredible sample sale this weekend with more than one-million bucks’ worth of designer duds. These threads are 50-70% off and the sale’s profits go to the HW’s Women’s Health Center. The Chelsea location, 143 West 17th St. is the shop where the sale will be held. Call for hours, 718-838-5050. Beginning tonight, November 14th and throughout the weekend, until Sunday the 16th.

A La Mode: Shop. And shop again. Why not? Money is of no object today in downtown Manhattan! The LAFCO Warehouse Store offers up some fancy leather goods and yummy toiletries at a recession-friendly 75% off. 161 6th Ave (between Spring & Vandam St., Mezzanine level). Call 212-925-0001 for more information. Sale is today only (each Friday) from 10am – 6pm.

Enjoy the eats, treats and shopping feats this week(end). See you next Friday.
