Dish Buzz: Posto

Posto, Gramercy

Posto, Gramercy

If you follow N.Y.C. food blogs, you’ve  likely read the recent Twitter war between Jimmy Fallon and his followers against  Posto, a small local pizza restaurant.

Posto isn’t your NYC standard nor does it claim to be. The exterior clearly states “thin crust pizza,” so I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if your expectations are set appropriately (and if you like thin crust pizza, of course). This might not be a place for the self-proclaimed pizza snob who has a distaste for funky, non-traditional pizza toppings. I like it because the ingredients are fresh, the cheese excellent (a must), and you walk out not feeling like you’ve dropped a cheesy bomb into your stomach.

Their personal pie is perfect for one (I usually intend to save a portion for later but instead devour the whole pie in one sitting) and the large pie is enough for two to share with a little extra. I’m a fan of The Big Pineapple, a mozarella cheese pie with marinara sauce, fresh pineapple, smoked bacon, fresh tomatoes, and fresh basil. I really like their bacon, which somehow manages to fall between regular, crisp bacon and Canadian bacon.

For non-pizza items, their spinach salad is one of my favorite simple starter salads in the city. It’s more than plenty to share among the table. The white balsamic vinaigrette is subtle and a nice alternative to the standard balsamic. They don’t skimp on toppings either, topping the spinach with a heaping portion of sun dried tomatoes, feta cheese, and purple onions. I’d recommend gum or Altoids after the meal.

They also have some great lunch combo specials offered daily until 5pm. You can order by slice or have a combination of a slice(s) and a side salad. They also have a varied selection of sandwiches available at lunchtime. With the exception of the pitas, the sandwiches are served on pressed ciabatta bread. The bread is fresh and super crispy. If your mouth is super sensitive, you might want to opt out.

I have a hard time passing up dessert. My favorite is their homemade warm chocolate brownie, served fresh out of the oven. It’s large so it’s good for splitting. If you’re dining solo, you can opt for their single friendly menu option of half a brownie. (Why don’t more places do this?) For something sweet at a lower price point, their homemade warm jumbo chocolate chip cookie is excellent. It’s huge, fresh out of the oven and $2.

I’ve consistently had great service and have always enjoyed my meals at Posto… which is why it’s one of my favorite places to go for pizza. To each his own… but my vote? Check this one out for yourself. I think you’ll find it a nice change.
