New York City Comedy – Funny Voices: Don’t watch, DO!

Posted Friday, August 15th, 2008 at 10:26 am by Matt in Social Bees. More in 10010

Happy Friday all!  I will be celebrating my birthday tomorrow under a haze of alcohol and bowling at Gutter, and for a birthday present, how about you do something for me: take that desire you’ve had to get onstage and DO IT THIS WEEK!  There are several improv and stand-up open mics around the city that you can jump on with little to no experience.  Everyone starts somewhere…why not make one of these shows your starting line?

Improdome (The PIT, free, 11:00 pm Wednesday)

New Team Lunacy (The PIT, free, 11:00 pm Thursday)

The great thing about these open stages at The PIT is that they are incredibly supportive.  If you’ve never dipped your toe into improv waters, this is the place to do it.  The people that frequent these shows are friendly, helpful, and also hilarious.

There are SO MANY places to get up and do stand-up, you can easily be overwhelmed.  Luckily, one woman has been crazy enough to compile a huge database of mics:

GiggleChick’s List of Open Mics

Just pick one closest to you and do it.  My personal faves are Don’t Touch Me There (Tuesdays),Motel Wednesdays (Wednesday, obvs), and The DMV Show (Thursdays).

Liquid Courage (UCB, free, 12:00 Friday)

If you have any type of written comedy piece, and you want to know what it’ll sound like on stage, take it here.  Anything goes here, so don’t be afraid to try whatever!

I know it can be scary in your head to try this, but let me tell you what a wise No Fear t-shirt once told me: Screw Fear.

It took me several months of sitting behind some goof in homeroom before I finally got that.
