Rainbow in DUMBO

I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted this morning at the train station by AMNY‘s front page caption, “Rainbow Connection,” with a photo of Manhattan! I was intrigued about this article, it probably had something to do with Vermont’s recently passed legislation to allow same-sex marriages. When I sat on the train I opened up the paper to discover this was not an article about same-sex marriage but rather the city’s $2 million ad campaign to gay travelers. My initial thought was “Hallelujah!” simply because this means the gays are being encouraged to come to my city.

As I continued to read, I couldn’t help but be even more excited as I saw where the campaign was taking place: in the United Kingdom and Spain! Sign me up for one of each: a Brit and a Spaniard! (The campaign is also happening in Canada and New York too, for the record.) The marketing blitz is targeting gay and lesbian travelers to make a “pilgrimage” to the Big Apple to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. This means one thing: if all goes according to the city’s plans Pride Weekend (June 27 & 28) are going to be amazing! I better start planning my outfits (or lack there of) now!! Speaking of planning, if you are looking for where all these gays are being encouraged to go, you can visit the calendar of events and try to plan not only your outfit, but your schedule accordingly!

This week, as I mentioned earlier, was also a huge day for same-sex marriages! On the heels of Iowa passing court ordered of same-sex marriage, Vermont, becomes the fourth state in the country to allow everyone the right to marry! What sets Vermont aside from Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa, is that the legalization of same sex marriage was passed with a legislature’s vote… in layman’s terms: it was the first state to do so by choice! AMEN!

On the same day Vermont’s House & Senate overode Govenor Jim Douglas’ veto, Washington, D.C. voted to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. While not a complete victory, it definitely a step in the right direction! Now all I need to do is find a man to marry so I can move to Vermont and have a reception at the Ben & Jerry’s factory! Which may have been a dream since I was a little boy! What? Who doesn’t enjoy a bowl full of Chunky Monkey?!
