Gay Life – The Paulinator: Play Ball!

Posted Thursday, May 27th, 2010 at 6:21 am by paul in Healthy Bees. More in 10011

Taking a break from the Twitter world, I figured it was high time I went out and explored some of the new night life and to find some new hot spots. Living in New York for over eight years now, one would think I would have grown to love the Yankees, well don’t count on that happening anytime soon… You see for as long as I can remember I have been a huge Red Sox fan!

Shocked that this queen likes sports, don’t be, there are still several things you’ve yet to learn, but also, sports aren’t simply a hetero pastime. You may even be surprised to learn that NYC has not one, but two gay sports bars, and here I bring you my review of both…

Gym Bar, 167 8th Ave. My first visit to Gym bar left me feeling very out of place. While I have been pumping iron at David Barton Gym, it clearly has not been enough. I went on a weekday where drinks were 2 for 1 until 9pm and they were strong, very much like the men I was surrounded by. The music was decent, the front patio was nice, but overall this bar seemed really crowded for my liking. I’ve gone back on a number of occasions and I’ve never gotten the welcome vibe from any staff member. That’s fine, it’s just when you’ve come from crushing on bartenders, it’s quite a shock when they don’t even flirt for tips. Over all I give Gym Bar a 3 out of 5 stars. They certainly earned extra points for making their drinks strong!

Newly opened Boxers (37 West 20th Ave) serves many of it’s drinks at a dollar more than Gym, but if that is the only thing I can find wrong with the new Chelsea establishment, I say welcome to the hood! We didn’t get off to a great start, you see, Boxers had an open bar party on it’s first night and having waited twenty minutes at the bar and no drink in my hand, then I decided I would try again on a less crazy night. Boy, am I glad that I did! Not only does Boxers serve unbelievable Pizza (I enjoy both “The Twink” and “Italian Stallion”) but they also get an A+ in the hospitality department. The busy bartenders were asking my name, I was greeted at the door with a warm smile and a very sexy “Hello”!! I really hope this bar succeeds in this hood because it’s a very welcoming establishment. If you get e chance to check it out, go because it’s well worth your time! I’m going to give Boxers a 4.5 out of 5 because I’m sure they’ve got great things in store to earn that last half a point!
