Viola Competition Finals

Tuesday, October 8 at 4:00 PM, Paul Hall

Juilliard violists perform Joan Tower’s viola concerto Purple Rhapsody; the winner will perform the work with the Juilliard Chamber Orchestra on November 9 at Alice Tully Hall.

Juilliard Jazz Orchestra | The Music of Thad Jones

Tuesday, October 8 at 8:00 PM, Peter Jay Sharp Theater

The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, conducted by James Burton, III opens its season performing from the charts of the legendary  trumpeter, composer, and arranger Thad Jones (1923-1986), known for his classic big band works and performances with the Count Basie Orchestra and the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra.

Richard Bonynge Master Class

Wednesday, October 9 at 6:00 PM, Peter Jay Sharp Theater

Acclaimed Australian conductor and pianist Richard Bonynge leads singers from Juilliard’s Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts in his and the Solti Accademia’s first-ever New York City public master class, celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Georg Solti Accademia, an Italian-based organization dedicated to educating highly talented singers in the art of Italian opera and song.

Victor Pappas directs Juilliard’s fourth-year actors in playwright Jeffrey Hatcher’s Smash—a comedy based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1883 novel An Unsocial Socialist in which love triangles, mistaken identities, Mark, Engels, pistols, and the proletariat jostle for position.

Jeffrey Milarsky Conducts AXIOM

Friday, October 11 at 8:00 PM, Peter Jay Sharp Theater

Specializing in the 20th century’s “classic” repertoire and conducted by acclaimed American conductor Jeffrey Milarsky, Juilliard’s critically-acclaimed contemporary music ensemble AXIOM opens its season with two works by American composer and Juilliard alumnus Jacob Druckman, and the world premiere of the 2013 version of American composer Morton Subotnick’s Jacob’s Room, performed by guest vocalist Joan La Barbara.
