All Things Queens – The Bruce Springsteen of Queens: Is There Anyone Alive Out There??!!!

Posted Friday, February 6th, 2009 at 8:47 am by Nathan in Healthy Bees. More in 11377

On a day like this Tuesday, when snow is falling and debtors may be calling, I think it’s important for everyone to take a second and remember what The Boss said before the Superbowl: “Is there anyone alive out there?! Is anybody out there alive??!!”

At first I didn’t even know why I was writing this blog today. I thought I don’t know that I have any advice to give anyone. I’m as lost as everyone else. Right now I’m sitting in my apartment, the same as everybody else, wondering where the next paycheck is going to come from. But you know what, that is exactly why I am writing this. WE ARE ALL LOST SOME DAYS. BUT WE’RE ALL ALSO STILL ALIVE.

Is anybody out there alive??!!

Something about the way he said it chilled me to the bone. In an event that over the last 20 years has produced an overwhelming numbness in the hearts of many with repetitive commercials and desperate pleas to my your choice of light beer, Bruce came through with a shock to my heart. It was almost like he said, “Nathan, don’t forget: You are alive.” My eyes  suddenly opened. The fog cleared. And I saw someone bathed in golden light . . . THE BOSS.

Right now I’m typing in my navy blue robe as I listen to the old school portion of my Essential Bruce Springsteen on the DVD player through my TV because my computer no longer plays CDs. I guess it could be worse. Right?

I could be on the streets in the snow. Or I could be completely alone, with no family or loved ones. This doesn’t make it easy, but somehow I think it makes it worth it.

A big part of me feels like life is kind of like the Superbowl. Like a team practicing all week, we all fight every day to try to “make things real,” as The Boss says, to make it all work out. Every day we struggle and struggle to do the best we can, to make money, to take care of our families, to make our parents proud, to make ourselves proud, to prove to everyone back home that we are not some loser who couldn’t hack it. “No, I am Nathan Paul Efferson. I am meant to be on this Earth. I am meant to make a difference . . . ”

Then we all come together at events like Superbowls, birthdays, Christmas, Hanukkah, weddings, funerals, because, you know what’s important? People. Life. Love. For a few hours, you’re able to forget about the everyday bullshit of bills, guest lists, dinner parties, oil changes, and remember why we are all on this Earth . . .

So, even though we don’t usually get a chance to say it outright, during the Star Spangled Banner or Happy Birthday song, we can exchange a glance, squeeze a hand a little longer, hug a little harder, and somehow communicate to each other: THIS LIFE SUCKS SOMETIMES, BUT WE’RE IN IT TOGETHER. AND WE DESERVE TO ENJOY IT. AND I SEE YOU WORKING HARD. YOU DESERVE TO BE HAPPY.

So, take a little time today, even if it’s just by yourself, in the mirror, to let someone know that they are not alone, that what they are contributing to this world is worth it. It might not seem like a lot, but sometimes it can be the difference between hanging in there and giving up. And as a good friend’s basketball coach once told him, “Sometimes just hanging in there is victory.”
