The Hamptons: A Very British Invasion

East Hampton Windmill

So you can imagine how I excited I was to be invited for a weekend in East Hampton. The heat had finally descended on the city,  in my Brooklyn neighbourhood garbage was steaming and stepping outside was like being draped in a warm, clammy towel. With visions of swimming pools and sea breezes dancing in our heads we boarded the Long Island Rail Road at Flatbush Avenue and in a little under three hours we were in another world…

A cross between the French Riviera and the Hollywood Hills, seemingly stalled in the 1950s, the Hamptons have to be seen to be believed. So if you’re after a classier paddle than Coney Island can offer why not plan a daytrip there before Labour Day brings the party to an end? See over the jump for some cunning plans…

Whether you take the LIRR or the Jitney, there’s plenty of ways to get your own slice of Hampton life…

Westhampton – If you can swing a day off work midweek, why not take advange of the Jitney’s Day at the Beach offer. For a mere $69 you can spend the day swanking it out with the best of em, and be back in your own bed by nightfall.

Sag Harbour – You’ve read the book, now visit the charming seaside village for yourself. Although flashy pleasure yachts line the wooden dock, this is one place in the Hamptons where the clapboard “cottages” are actual cottages, rather than gated, hedged-in estates.

Shelter Island – If you like a helping of endorphins with your mini-break, you might want to take Time Out New York’s advice and take your bike across the ferry from Sag Harbour to this cycle-friendly getaway, with its green lanes and scene-y beach bars.

East Hampton– Join the likes of Stephen Spielburg and Martha Stewart for walks along the miles of perfect sandy beaches, adventures in 17th century windmills and (for the next few weeks at least) Shakespeare under the stars.

And that’s just for starters . . .

Drop me a line if I’ve missed your favourite Hamptons hideaway. ‘Til then I’ll be turning up my fan and staycationing on my fire escape…
