Gay Life – The Paulinator: Love in the Afternoon

Posted Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at 9:02 am by paul in Social Bees. More in

Now that I have decided to attempt to play the field and start dating, which has yet to officially happen, I’ve already gotten a little tired. I have to take a little bit of a break. Let me share with you how I unwind, de-stress and gather inspirational tips for improving my love life… daytime dramas!

Who does not love a good soap opera? With the gloom and doom in the media all the time, these rare daytime dramas are a breath of fresh air. I grew up watching Guiding Light and am not entirely sure what I would do if it was “killed off” so to speak. Whatever channel you tune into it also seems that gay and lesbian couple are creeping into these solely heterosexual worlds!

Bianca & Reese

Who wasn’t shocked when Erica Kane’s daughter, Bianca, announced she was a lesbian a few years ago? I was thrilled! I also loved that Eden Riegal who plays Bianca’s has not changed her portrayal of her character. The character has integrity and a gentleness about her that only enhances your love for her, regardless of your sexual orientation. Now, back on the show after a brief hiatus, Bianca has come home to Pine Valley with child and a fiancee, Reese. How utterly fantastic to see such growth of this character – who probably has had one of the most hard knock existences a soap character could have – finally find happiness… well it is daytime so it will probably only last a minute, but nevertheless it gives me hope.

Noah & Luke

Over in Oakdale, the fictional town for As the World Turns, heartthrob and my TV crush Van Hansis (Luke) and his onscreen boyfriend Noah finally “did the deed” after being together for well over a year. There seems to be some confusion amongst the writers over at As the World Turns because I don’t know of any gay man that has waited that long before sleeping with his boyfriend! I’m not sure why it took so long to finally put these two in bed together. Their first kissing scene has over 1 million views on YouTube! The crazy thing is, for all the “sex” daytime portrays amongst it’s straight couples, all As the World Turns showed was basically the afterglow between Luke and Noah and it was a huge deal– it even appeared on PerezHilton! Though, I’m not one to talk, I would watch “Nuke” afterglow any day of the week… talk about giving me hope!

Olivia & Natalia

As I mentioned, I grew up watching Guiding Light, the longest running show in broadcast history, just turning 72 years old! While they don’t technically have a gay couple on the show, they have been toying with the idea of pairing two talented and beautiful actresses. Currently Crystal Chappell (Olivia) and Jessica Leccia (Natalia) are one of the hottest non-couple super couples on the show (and probably on all of daytime, dare I say). What makes their story unique is both of these characters are much older than the couples I mentioned previously and have gone through more life experiences and previously had relationships men. At one point they loved the same man. Regardless of whether or not they are officially a couple, they make up a unique family unit, that includes Emma, who is Olivia’s daughter. Emma recently did a school project about her family titled, “My two mommies.”

Families come in all shapes and sizes and I’m thrilled to see Guiding Light embracing the idea that there is no such thing as a cookie cutter family. All you need is a unconditional love and maybe a dash of hope for the future and you’ve got one heck of a family!
